Hi and welcome to Round 1
With a very dark and gloomy Saturday morning, what was the first round of the W.L.S.C. to bring us. A few racers hit the road only to reach the circuit and find plenty of standing water. The forecast was not good and the hope for sun in the afternoon was also very doubtful. With only a handful of racers present Gavin Wilkinson was the first on circuit, many drivers still building there new machines.
Well with a very bright and somewhat different weather conditions on Sunday, racers started to arrive. at 10am the 2strokes came alive and the 30 minute practice session was underway.
With 3 classes present it was decided that the GTS class would be split for the timed qualifying runs, giving drivers a break between the heats.
First out was the Formula 1 cars, Martin Boul set the pace in the early stages but closely followed by Harry Peberdy making good ground and Graham Parson bringing up the rear. As the heats progressed Harry found the speed needed to put him on pole position for the final.
The GTS class although being split were to be run as one final, with all to play for Geoff Repton,Gavin Wilkinson and Ryan Warriner were battling through one set of heats whilst Tony Rudd and Martin Boul in the other heats. some very quick cars lower down the field, it was Martin who sat on pole in this class for the final.
The saloon cars, very fast and very exciting, with some of last years podium finishers Adam Griffith (2) and Adam Preece (3) not present, this left Trevor Kersey defending champion to set the pace in the first run, hot on his bumper was last years GT champion Peter Rameswari, with only a 2 second gap over the seven minute run between these 2 cars this could be a very interesting final, Peter donned the pole position for the first round.
At 2.45 the finals were underway and Harry Peberdy had a faultless run leading from start to finish leaving Martin and Graham to battle it out, for the first quarter of the race these 2 were having a good battle, after 15 minutes Graham retired leaving harry to win and Martin 2nd
The GTS class was fast and furious with many drivers wanting the title with the defending champion now in the saloons. Disaster for Martin seconds before the start with the clock ticking and our no 1 qualifier in the pits with servo problems the race was underway with 3rd place man Tony Rudd getting a balistic start Geoff Repton went out of shape and dropped down the field, this left Gavin, closely followed by the Warriners. this was turning into a very exciting race with the lead changing throughout the race. Stuart Riley was now making good ground after starting from a dissapointing back row. by lap 13 it was riley now leading and seeming to be pulling away from the field, mainly due to a collision between Rudd and Wilkinson. By lap 23 disaster struck Riley as he went to pass a back marker and they struck. this left the victory to Rudd closely followed by Repton and Wilkinson, some very good racing went on lower down the field with Steve Warriner and son Ryan.
The main Final for the saloons got off to a good start with Trevor Kersey passing Peter on the infield of the first lap, Peter stayed with him for a lap or so, meanwhile what seemed like glued to his rear bumper was Rob Macvean, closely followed by Jim Griffith, Brian Robertson and Mike Tosh. Kersey semmed to now pull away leaving battles for 2nd place and a 3 car battle for 4th place. a good win for the defending champion with Rob 2 laps down and then 8 seconds behind was Peter.
